The Tao of Politics

One of my main concerns is: how can I make a difference? There are thousands of political blogs out there. It’s easy to get lost in that ocean. So I may blog about politics on occasion, or I may blog about health issues, depending on where my interests lead me, and where I feel I can contribute something of significance.

I’m a Southern Democrat and I like NASCAR. OK, I’m not a fanatic like some people, but I think it is possible to be a NASCAR dad and not be a cheerleader at the same time for large corporations, etc. In short, maybe it is possible to educate NASCAR dads. Of course I could be wrong. You know, I have thought about things like this a lot. It reminds me of the US Civil War. It seems to me that Southern men in the 19th century went off to fight and die for two things: the large plantation owners and slavery. Today’s Southern men are voting for basically two things: the large corporations and social injustice. Do you see the parallel? So that’s the problem. What’s the solution? I need to do a lot more thinking about that. In some ways Southern men are like dogs: they are willing to lick your hand if at some point you will throw them a bone. The political bones valued by many Southern men are hot button issues like gay marriage. That’s too bad. Most of these issues don’t affect Southern men in any way, whereas tax cuts for the rich do. It baffles me why these guys are such fervent defenders of a system that does not give back to them the same measure of support. I’m sure that there is something in all this that relates to following orders, not questioning authority, doing what daddy says without question. It is just mind boggling that there are people in this country who refuse to evolve.

While we’re on the subject above, it looks like obesity is a growing problem, particularly in the South. These people refuse to evolve and eat a more healthy diet. It’s mind boggling. Plato said that people will act in their best interest if they know what that is. Boy, how naïve was he? The American people prove him wrong every day. (You can check your own state’s rate of obesity here.)

It’s funny: I believe President George War Bush when he says he’s going to stay in Iraq until the job is finished, but I don’t believe him when he says he’s going to stay in New Orleans until that job is finished. Or at least I don’t believe he approaches the latter situation with anywhere near the urgency that he does the former, and that is too bad, because we’re talking about shortchanging our own citizens here, and that is wrong.

Vice President Duck! Cheney is scaring the American people again. It seems to me that the Vice President is using scare tactics and the war on terror for political purposes. I sincerely hope the American people will not be scared this time. We can all vote Democratic without fear that American citizens will die as a result. In fact, if you vote Republican you can guarantee that more American soldiers will die in Iraq. So which is really the party that keeps our people safe? There are 2600+ Americans dead because of the policies of George War Bush and Duck! Cheney. It was pointed out last night on the news that this number is approaching the number of casualties suffered on 9/11. Great! Stay the course? Not if the Democrats have anything to say about it. (Note: I would not have the same position if the 2600+ had died in Afghanistan. The war against the Taliban and Al Qaeda were necessary. But the war in Iraq was not necessary, and those deaths were not necessary.)

One further point: in the above article Vice President Cheney says “We were not in Iraq on September 11, 2001, but the terrorists hit us anyway.” True, we did not have 100,000 troops in Iraq on 9/11, but we had been involved in Iraq for decades; we had a presence in other Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia; and we were very chummy with Israel. The Vice President says being in Iraq was not the reason for 9/11? I think the terrorists have plenty of reasons to hate us. Our occupation of Iraq is just the latest one. (BTW, here is an interesting article on Mr. Cheney.)

Prediction Time
Here is what is going to happen within the next two years or so: something dramatic will take place – another 9/11; another 3/11; or another 7/7, something like that, although it doesn’t necessarily have to be on that scale. The United States will blame Iran and will use the event as an excuse to attack Iran, supposedly in retaliation, just like they did with Iraq.

Talking points
Are we really better off, as the administration says, with Saddam gone? No. The region is totally destabilized, Iran is a stronger menace, and we’re bogged down in Iraq losing lives and money at alarming rates. How is any of that good?

Are we really fighting them over there so that we don’t have to fight them here? I don’t want to give away any State secrets. Let me just say that Iraq and the United States are two different places. Homeland Security is responsible for keeping us safe at home. Iraq has nothing to do with our safety. In fact the war has made us less safe as a country mainly because so many more people hate us now than hated us before we occupied Iraq.

Remembering New Orleans

Today is not the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s striking the Gulf Coast, but I want to remember that event anyway. We should remember it every day of every week of every month of every year forever. I don’t think we have remembered it enough so far. In fact I think the people of New Orleans have often been forgotten in the past year. So today I remember the victims of Katrina, and I dedicate this song to them:

The Sailor, by Ed Bremson

I’m thinking about you, people of New Orleans, all of you, with love and compassion. Others are thinking of you as well. May all your troubles be over someday soon.

Uh oh, George War Bush is on vacation again. Another disaster may be on its way. Hurricane Katrina struck last year while Bush was on vacation. Al Qaeda was hatching its 9/11 plot in 2001, also while Bush was on vacation. Somebody had better be watching the store. BTW, where is Vice President Duck! Cheney? Shouldn’t he like be in charge if the President is away? We need to remain on alert, particularly in times such as these. I’m sorry, but this administration does not inspire much confidence as far as I’m concerned.

I am impressed. This video from Crooks and Liars (I love this site!) features the communication skills of Kirsten Powers and Michael Brown. These two Democrats are extremely articulate and have some good things to say. Kirsten actually out-talks Ann Coulter in this clip, which is no small feat, and she looks better than Ms Coulter, in my humble opinion. Ms Powers, besides appearing on Fox News as a political analyst, also operates a blog, PowersPoint, to which she appears to be an occasional contributor. Busy woman. I think these two people, Kirsten Powers and Michael Brown, have a bright future as Democratic strategists. Good luck!

Here is an article that says one in ten British girls harm themselves with cutting, etc. Sad. There was an article a few months ago saying that 17% of US college students have engaged in self-harming behavior. Here is an article in Wikipedia with more information on this subject, and here are some other online resources for help and info: TeensHealth; S.A.F.E. Alternatives; Psyke.org. I sincerely hope we can do something about this troubling behavior. Of course it might help if society itself didn’t seem to be self-destructing.

This article just supports what I said earlier about Iran's influence in the region.
You know, I really feel that George War Bush has screwed it up big time. With regard to Iran, Saddam Hussein was keeping that country in check to a large extent. Now that Saddam is gone, Iran is emboldened and seems to be expanding its influence. And it is really serious. Iran was a huge threat three years ago. It is even more of a threat today. By doing nothing about Iran in 2003, and by removing Saddam, Bush has effectively created a HUGE MESS in the Middle East. What can we do now? I don’t claim to be an expert in these matters, but there are a number of possibilities that I can see: create another strongman regime in Baghdad to counterbalance the regime in Teheran; maintain a large US presence in Iraq as a counterbalance to Iran; and/or do to Iran what Israel did to Lebanon recently, i.e., take them down a few pegs by bombing the hell out of them and thereby diminishing their effectiveness in the region. (Only problem: if we start bombing Iran, does our presence in Iraq become untenable? Is this why Israel may be our proxy in the bombing?) As much as I’d like to say Get the Hell out of Iraq, like my song does, I don’t think we can ever leave because that would mean ceding the entire region to Iran, which besides being a huge step backwards from where we were in 2003 is totally unacceptable. I’m afraid we have no choice now but to stay in Iraq indefinitely; to continue losing lives, both Iraqi and American; and to continue wasting all that money. Thank you George War Bush, Duck! Cheney, Condo Rice, Colon Powell, “Donny, you’re out of your element” Rumsfeld, et al.

Here is interesting analysis from the New York Observer on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 prospects. I don’t have any quarrel with the article, but she has so much money that she might get the nomination anyway. If she does, I really don’t see her winning in the general election.

President George War Bush’s poll numbers get a boost when there is terror news. That’s interesting. Maybe we’ll see more terror news as the midterm elections approach. Ya think???

This post says Bush makes Santorum look like a liar. You be the judge.

Here is one reason why something needs to be done about genetically engineered crops: unapproved genetically modified rice has accidentally gotten into commercial supplies. This technology is uncontrollable, and in some cases is actually out of control. Let’s go organic!

Being overweight is bad for you health, really! Actually it can kill you. Can’t get much more serious than that.

Get the Hell out of Iraq

This is the world blogosphere premiere of a new song I just wrote yesterday entitled "Get the Hell out of Iraq." I hope you enjoy listening to it. The lyrics are below. If you like it, send it to your friends. Maybe it can help, in some small way, bring peace to the Iraqi people, and bring our brave soldiers back home.

Time to bring our soldiers back,
Get the hell out of Iraq.
Yes we’ve been there far too long
Going over there was wrong.

Well so many people died
Just because somebody lied
And so many people maimed
But the right ones ain’t been blamed.

Oh how many more must die
And how many more must cry?
Time to bring our soldiers back
Get the hell out of Iraq.

There’s been such a heavy cost
And our purpose there seems lost.
It was doubtful all along.
Going over there was wrong.

I just wonder what it’s for
When we fight a useless war?
Is it making us secure?
No it’s not, of that I’m sure.

Don’t you know this war is rough?
But our country’s had enough.
Time to bring our soldiers back,
From this hell that’s called Iraq.

Oh how much more will it cost,
And how much more will be lost,
Til our brave ones all come back
And get the hell out of Iraq?

Hillary Clinton is preparing to run for president in 2008? As Gomer Pyle used to say, “Surprise, Surprise!” Who knows, maybe she has a chance? But when a poll says she only has a 44% negative rating, that is more than a year before the campaign has even started, and before the negative ads have started. I mean, these people are able to create negative feelings about WAR HEROES, for God’s sake. Just think what they’ll do to Hillary. Will it matter? We’ll have to wait until 2008 to find out. Besides, if you have enough money, as Hillary seems to have, you can probably fight back pretty effectively. It just seems to me that you might want to choose a candidate who is not so polarizing, someone like Edwards or Clark, or maybe even Richardson – someone who can run well in the Red States, which is something that I still don’t see Hillary doing.

Research says that yellow and green vegetables may guard against age-related macular degeneration. I don’t necessarily believe this research, but since I am vegan, yellow and green vegetables sound good to me, and are probably good for my health generally anyway, so bring ‘em on. The same goes for Indian food – regardless of what some obscure research may say, I do think Indian food is generally healthy for me. Maybe I’ll have some today for lunch. Yum!

Seventeen Shiite pilgrims killed today in Iraq. I wonder what the Iraqi people think about our continued presence there. You know, much of the talk is centered on “cut and run” and what does the United States want. But what does Iraq want? Are they happy having us there, day in and day out? Would they be happy to see us go? Maybe if we weren’t there those seventeen pilgrims would be alive right now, and not dead.

And there was an article in the New York Times about how Iraqis are afraid to go to their mosques and pray because that is where much of the violence happens. Oh yes, it is a great situation in Iraq, brought to you by the policies of George War Bush, Duck! Cheney, “Shut the fuck up, Donny” Rumsfeld, Condo Rice, et al. Please Lord, save us from incompetent leaders.

How would you like to be out of the Army, home, safe, and then get called back for duty to Iraq? It's happening, folks. The conduct of this war is so absurd and often so unfair. Please get out the Democratic vote in November.

So now they’re adding bacteriophage viruses to lunch meats? Great. That's bound to be safe. I don’t eat that stuff anyway, but this just seems like one more reason why I don't want to eat it. I'll just remain vegan, thank you, although at some point they’ll probably figure out a way to screw up the vegetables (if they haven’t already.)

So what are we doing now, exporting obesity? There was the story the other day that there are more obese people in the world than hungry people. Now we learn that the British are becoming fatter. Great. Let’s see how all this drives up health care costs for those of us who take our eating habits seriously and who are not obese.

In medical news, this is one of the most unusual stories I have ever heard: you start out with two embryos, twins; then one of the twins absorbs the other twin, and you end up with one person being born who has two sets of DNA. This phenomenon is called a chimera, and I’ve heard of it before, but not in relation to human beings. Here is an ABC News video of the story also.

This is interesting: twenty-one high ranking former US officials call on George War Bush to change his hard line approach and be more open to negotiating with countries like Iran and North Korea, saying that his policies have made this country less safe.

Well, I think deficits do matter, but apparently George War Bush disagrees.

I’m tired of hearing that the Republicans can protect our homeland from terrorism better than the Democrats can. They are somehow insinuating that the Democrats are soft on terrorism by saying that. No one is soft on terrorism. No one wants terrorists to succeed. I might remind everyone that Democrats foiled the Millennium LAX bombing plot. I would also say that I remember the 1990s as generally a peaceful time, certainly nothing like the last five years. Some say that certain policies of the Democrats would embolden the terrorists. I say, how much more bold can they be than they are right now?

Terrorism is a bad thing for everyone. I don’t want to blame the Republicans for 9/11, and they should not impugn our ability or commitment to keep our country safe. Everyone wants the American people to feel safe and secure. That’s part of what it is to be American, unlike other people in the world who live in constant fear. Except sometimes it seems that the Republicans want to scare the American people with threats of terror for political purposes. Keith Olbermann on Countdown talks about this all the time. Republicans should stop scaring our citizens. They should also stop avoiding criticism by hiding behind our enemies. Republicans should talk about their policies, and Democrats should talk about theirs. The policies of George War Bush may have damaged our country more than any terrorist has. This is what I blame the Republicans for, and this is what I’d like to hold them accountable for.

Is online betting legal? It seems like I was reading somewhere that there was a push to outlaw it. Anyway, some people are betting on the upcoming US elections. Ned Lamont says he’s offended by the politicizing of terrorism that Duck! Cheney has engaged in recently. I’m offended too, but then I really don’t expect anything any different from the Republicans.

I guess Bill Richardson is running for president in 2008. Here is a website that is promoting his candidacy. I may be willing to support Richardson for president, but I’d like to hear more of what he has to say first.

There are more fat people in the world than there are hungry ones. This article talks about westernizing diets, consumption of soft drinks, as well as the purchase of motor vehicles and televisions as contributing to weight gain. Here is another article. Something really should be done about this disparity. What, I don’t know. But I feel bad for the obese and for the starving. The main problem, I think, is that the obese don’t feel bad for themselves, or often don’t see themselves as obese. (Here is another article on the causes of obesity.)

Are you willing to spend $8,000 a month to lose weight? Read this article. I frankly don’t know what the problem is. I lose weight and I don’t have to pay such exorbitant fees. I just have to stop eating stuff that adds pounds. It also helps if I exercise. Maybe I should open a weight loss clinic.

This whole thing about banning all liquids from your carry on luggage is ridiculous. I don’t want to give away any State secrets, but if a terrorist wants to carry liquid onto a plane he can, and it doesn’t have to be in a sports drink bottle. Also, a little common sense ought to have been exercised over the past few days. I’ve seen news footage of teenaged girls giving up their cosmetics, water bottles, etc. Look, if a fifteen year old girl from Des Moines Iowa is a threat to the plane . . . well it’s just ridiculous. I’m not for some sorts of profiling, but it is Arab terrorists who are trying to kill us, not girls from Iowa. However, you may never be able to assure total safety of an aircraft unless you resort to strip searches for EVERYONE, even grandma. (What’s in that colostomy pouch, anyway?) The world is going to hell, I swear it is.

Stars over Washington has another very interesting article, this time about the foiled plot to blow up planes bound from the UK to the US. They are true, blue Americans over at Stars over Washington.

Here is a guy with a little more sense and a lot more credentials than I have who decries our involvement in Iraq, and who thinks we should concentrate more on the actual war on terror. Watch the video.

George War Bush says we aren’t safe and that there are still a lot of terror threats out there. Right, George, and that’s why we should be focusing all our energy on combating those terror threats instead of squandering most of our resources militarily, monetarily, and otherwise, on this needless war in Iraq.

Ken Mehlman smearing John Murtha? No! Are you serious? The Republicans would actually smear someone? Next you’ll tell me that the Republicans would play politics with 9/11 and the war on terror.

John Edwards looked pretty good on Hardball last night. Generally I thought he did a good job of dodging the clumsy and ridiculous attempts by Chris Matthews to tie him to Ted Kennedy, and to get him to blame America for terrorism. I’m not crazy about John Edwards, particularly because he voted for the Iraq War. But he has said he regrets that vote, which is more than Hillary has been willing to do. I could vote for him in 2008. One other thing occurs to me, however: Edwards doesn’t seem, at this point, to stand out as a candidate, and he doesn’t appear to have the stature of a president. If I had to say who I favor right now it would be Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, and Bill Richardson.

When we were picking a new basketball coach at NC State University, I think it was important to bring in someone who would bring about positive change and about whom we could get excited. Sidney Lowe fit those criteria. We need to be excited about our next president too. So far I just don’t feel that way about John Edwards.

Here is some interesting research pertaining to Alzheimer’s disease. We live in a potentially wonderful time, when we might see the cures of many diseases.

Jude Cowell at Stars Over Washington seems to hypothesize that the United States is in a precarious period right now due to Mars turning retrograde. Here is more on retrograde Mars.

Has anyone thought much about pesticides lately? I try to eat organic as much as possible. I was reading this article, and it is difficult to ignore the fact that there are a lot of pesticide residues in our food. Are they bad for us? I don’t know, but it is interesting to note that when children were fed a diet of organic food, the pesticide levels in their bodies noticeably dropped. People are always saying things like, “We have not proven a direct correlation between doing X and getting sick.” Right, and that’s what they said about cigarette smoking too. For my part I will steer toward the side of caution. Consuming pesticides can’t be good for me. I don’t think anyone is claiming that pesticides are making me healthier, although they might claim that eating food, which just happens to contain pesticide, is good for my health. To me that is debatable. In the meantime I will try to avoid pesticides as much as possible and just hope I don’t get some catastrophic illness.

Wow, they seem to be just chopping out these prostates right and left. Now doctors are making changes in a diagnostic scale to account for the fact that prostate problems in black men are often different than those in white men. That’s all well and good, but if all men, not just African-Americans, were counseled to adopt a more healthy diet, I daresay that they could avoid a lot of prostate cancer, not to mention a lot of other health problems.

Certain nutrients have been found to prevent colorectal cancer.

I bought a couple of mangoes the other day. Does everyone know that mangoes are in the poison ivy family, and that some people have an allergic reaction after handling the fruit? Also, does everyone know that India produces nearly ten times as many mangoes as Mexico does?

Just one meal high in saturated fat can start the body down the road to inflammation and clogged arteries. For most people, the only problem is that if they can’t see the damage or feel it, then for them it doesn’t exist. So they go on for years damaging their bodies until it’s too late and they have to have some major, dangerous, and expensive intervention. I really feel that this is a matter of people not taking responsibility for their health. They owe it to themselves and to society to do so.

What the hell is going on with the oil situation in this country?

In medical news, chest x-rays can increase the risk of developing breast cancer in some cases.

And finally, Raggedy at It’s a Raggedy Life sent me this funny, but unsettling link recently.
