The Tao of Politics

One of my main concerns is: how can I make a difference? There are thousands of political blogs out there. It’s easy to get lost in that ocean. So I may blog about politics on occasion, or I may blog about health issues, depending on where my interests lead me, and where I feel I can contribute something of significance.

HuffingtonPost has a couple of posts today about Al Gore: an interview with The Rolling Stone, and a video snippet from his appearance on The Daily Show. Crooks and Liars has Jon Stewart’s complete interview with Al Gore.

Downing Street Memo has an interesting collection of material that constitutes a timeline on how we became involved in the Iraq War. I think it is useful to review material like this occasionally so that we can maintain perspective on this war and on this presidency.

Did five US soldiers rape and kill an Iraqi woman, then go on a killing and burning spree that resulted in three more deaths? It looks like at least four human beings are dead, and I don’t think their deaths were caused by Saddam Hussein or WMDs. Oh, this dreadful Iraq War! The Iraqi people, I’m sure, will be glad when we go home. (BTW, has anyone noticed that incidents of this kind seem to be increasing? What is going on? To me, the Iraq War is not one of our country’s most shining moments.)

Fasting for Freedom Update, Day 2: No coffee, soft drinks, or chocolate, but I am a little discouraged. I had hoped to get some people to join me on my fast, but there have been no takers so far. I understand that this is my thing. I just hope that people can somehow get enthusiastic about voting the Republicans out in November. If not, we may just be in for more of the same. I can’t stand the thought of that.

Fasting for Freedom
I cannot bear the thought of the Republicans winning in the 2006 midterm elections, and continuing to lead this country along the same wrong path for the next x number of years. Therefore, starting today I am fasting until the November 7 election.

What am I giving up on my fast? For the next 132 days I will not have coffee, soft drinks, or chocolate. Here is more information on fasting.

President Bush is supposedly engaged in his own fast. He is said to have given up eating sweets while there are soldiers fighting in Iraq, although there is some question as to whether or not he has totally adhered to his fast.

I do not deny that fasting may have spiritual implications for me. In the scheme of yin/yang, and in the spirit of the Tao, our country has swung too far in one direction. We need to swing back in the other direction, or at least toward the center – toward more balance. This kind of correction is inevitable, I think, but maybe we can help make it a reality.

What does Fasting for Freedom mean for America? It means: freedom from despair; freedom from fear; freedom from lies; freedom from deception; freedom from secrecy; freedom from manipulation; freedom from corruption; freedom from politics as usual; freedom from Republicans ruining our great country.

If anyone else wants to join me on my fast let me know. Leave a comment and a link and tell me how you plan to fast. Or send me an email.

Today I have had no coffee, just green tea to drink, so for me the fast has begun. Here’s to November, and to a new sense of optimism for America.

Waste and fraud from Hurricane Katrina may reach $2 billion, and that is extremely bad, but President Bush is wasting about $9 billion PER MONTH on a stupid Iraq War that was foisted upon the American public with fraudulent claims. What could our country do with all that money? The Democrats have some ideas.

Would you believe . . .

. . . President Bush said yesterday, “There’s a debate over whether (global warming) is manmade or naturally caused”? I’ll bet that’s enough to raise Al Gore’s hackles.

. . . President Bush’s approval rating has risen lately? Don’t let him off the hook this November. We need change in this country. But change won’t happen unless we vote for change.

Greenland’s two mile thick ice sheet is melting faster than it was five years ago.

In this video, Davis Guggenheim interviews Al Gore.

50,000 Iraqis have died since the US invasion of their country in 2003. This is 20,000 more people dead than previously acknowledged. And this, just like the 2500+ American troops dead, is not just a number, but represents actual human deaths, thanks in great part to the actions of George War Bush and Duck! Cheney. The Iraqis are humans too, and they deserve for us to leave so that the killing, for them, can stop. It’s not just about us.

People in Cyprus used to be very healthy. Then the United States exported its appallingly bad diet to the Cypriot people. Now Cyprus suffers from alarming rates of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. In short, they’re becoming just like the Americans.

As if this really matters, with all the bad stuff out there in the environment, in our food, etc, lemons are said to help fight cancer. Doesn’t the Mediterranean diet use a lot of lemons? Oh, but that’s right, the Mediterranean diet is disappearing, being supplanted by the American diet. USA! USA!

Speaking of pollution, there was a disturbing story about San Francisco, autism, and mercury pollution. See what I mean? You can just be minding your own business, living in one of the nicest areas of the country, and something sinister can be lurking in the environment that can ruin all that.

This is probably what disturbs me the most: you cannot be careful enough to avoid all the stuff out there that can kill you or that can make you sick. Furthermore, NO ONE IS ACCOUNTABLE! This may be the largest crime in history. And the deaths are all chalked up to “natural causes” when in reality they are probably caused by industrialization, hardly natural.

The world of politics is getting interesting. Donald Trump is sounding like someone who should be president. Senator Joseph Lieberman could lose his Democratic primary and still win the general election.

What about Al Gore? Martin Peretz has a great opinion piece about a possible 2008 Gore candidacy. An Inconvenient Truth won the Humanitas Prize. And there is at least one political action committee to draft Gore in 2008, with actual planned events and ability to donate to the cause.

Stay tuned for the next week or so as the Supreme Court tries to wind up its 2005-2006 session. Still to come? Some really tough, but interesting decisions.

The Iraqi government plans to offer a timeline for the withdrawal of all foreign troops. They are also taking steps to end the insurgency. Interesting. Maybe there is an end in sight after all.

Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire offers an update on key 2006 Senate and Gubernatorial races. Don’t forget to check the latest WSJ/Zogby poll of battleground states.

Sometimes I just get the feeling that Republicans are not very nice people. The remarks about Helen Thomas were bad enough, but Republicans don’t care about poor people, or the homeless, or anything that Democrats care about. All they seem to care about is their trucks, their Hummers, their homes on golf courses – in short, their money. Republicans are just too selfish.

Will Barack Obama run for president in 2008? I wouldn’t mind seeing him in the Oval Office, but I tend to doubt he could win. In the calculus of a presidential election, he would need to be able to run well in at least one Red State, and I just don’t see him doing that. I frankly don’t see Hillary doing it either. The Democrats need to put forth a candidate in 2008 who can win. We don’t need to squander that opportunity on the hubris of Hillary and Bill. Everyone knows how I feel: if not Al Gore, then Wesley Clark, John Edwards, or Mark Warner, all southern Red State men, would stand a good chance of winning and getting America back on track again.

John King interviewed Vice President Duck! Cheney tonight on CNN’s The Situation Room. The Vice President said: "This is a global conflict. We've seen them (the terrorists) attack in London, Madrid, Casablanca, Istanbul, and Mombasa in East Africa. They've been on a global basis involved in this conflict. And it will continue whether we complete the job or not in Iraq. " (emphasis added)

I believe the Vice President didn't mean to make that statement, but sometimes the truth just comes out. The terrorists will continue whether we stay in Iraq or pull out. Thank you for acknowledging that. That is one reason why we need to focus on the war against terror, and not on the Iraq War, because they are two different things. It is good to hear a member of the Bush administration admit that victory in Iraq will not bring an end to terrorism. George War Bush and Duck! Cheney have gotten us into a god awful mess. Someone needs to get us out, and the sooner the better.

I’m not usually that objective when it comes to talking about Al Gore. I really want him to be president. But here is an article that talks about him and about global warming. It pulls no punches.

Al Gore was on Countdown Monday night. I missed it, what with driving back from New York, and with watching the Carolina Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup. But good old Crooks and Liars has the video. Check it out.

On the war front, US troops are not as happy to be in Iraq as George War Bush and Duck! Cheney would like to think.

John Kerry and Dick Durbin want the troops to come home, as early as next year. I think a lot of Americans feel the same way, even some Republicans.

We have spent 438 billion dollars in the war on terror since 9/11, and I don’t think we are that well off. The Republicans point to the fact that there have been no other attacks since 9/11 to support their contention that their policies are working. I think it is a combination of our being vigilant (finally) and our being lucky.

On the purely political front, I was prepared to point to a CNN poll that showed huge negatives for Hillary Clinton as evidence that she shouldn’t be the Democratic nominee in 2008. Then I actually looked at the poll results. All the Democrats have higher negatives that do Giuliani and McCain. The only Republican who has higher negatives than the Democrats is Jeb Bush. I think the way to look at this is that it is too early to take polls seriously, although I do wish the Democrats scored better. After eight years of George War Bush, how can the American public prefer a Republican? It’s mind boggling.

The American Heart Association wants to limit the amount of trans fats that people consume. I’d like to get rid of trans fats altogether. One problem is that, even though a product may say it contains 0 grams trans fats, that doesn’t mean it does not contain trans fats at all, particularly if it does contain hydrogenated oil. And if a person eats a lot of processed food, the trace amounts of trans fats that he does consume adds up. Let’s just get rid of them.

The American Heart Association also has further guidelines for a healthy lifestyle, including counting calories and exercising. Some of these recommendations are worth paying attention to. As far as general recommendations go, these are pretty good. In the final analysis, however, each person has to make his or her own decisions for a healthy lifestyle.

They have discovered that wine contains melatonin, which tends to make a person sleepy. As far as I’m concerned, this is just one more reason why a glass or two of wine per day can have positive health benefits. Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant which strengthens the immune system and may be effective against cancer.

However, now scientists want to genetically engineer grapes that are used to make wine. This is one of my greatest fears: that scientists will screw up something as perfect as the grape. LEAVE MY GRAPES ALONE.

You can tell that global warming has gotten the world out of whack when the Arctic is melting, polar bears are eating each other, and North Carolina wins ice hockey’s Stanley Cup. Congratulations, Canes! North Carolina is proud of you.

I guess the tobacco companies are still trying to provide evidence that smoking is not bad for you. I’m sure their investors are glad about that, but I don’t know of too many others who are.

Apparently one fourth of all the death and disease in adults, and one third in children, is attributable to environmental factors – i.e., things we could do something about if we would.

Nora Ephron has been waxing nostalgic about Teflon. It turns out that Teflon is bad for you, she says. I say good riddance. (I’ve talked about the dangers of Teflon and PFOA before.) To wax nostalgic about Teflon is like being all warm and fuzzy about DDT, or something toxic like that. For me, the sooner it’s out of our lives the better. I know that you could make a great omelet in a Teflon pan, but who needs all those eggs and all that cholesterol anyway? Good riddance. And so you have to scrape or wash a few pans. Isn’t that a small price to pay for good health? My generation is already screwed. We’ve been exposed to all the carcinogens that our scientists could devise. I only hope that future generations can avoid some of those carcinogens. If we can start by getting rid of Teflon -- or PFOA, its toxic byproduct -- great. The only problem for me is that companies have until 2015 to get rid of it. So, how many more people are going to be exposed to this stuff before it’s finally gone. And even after it’s gone, it still persists in the environment for a long time. Knowing all this, will I get nostalgic about Teflon? No way!

The divorced father and mother of an eight-year-old boy are fighting in court over whether or not to have the boy circumcised. Very interesting. It seems that the mother has remarried, and her new husband is Jewish. So . . . is there really any question why this whole question came up? Too bad the child is in the middle of all this. Happy Father’s Day!

A lot of people are bitching and moaning today about all the money lost to fraud after Hurricane Katrina. Yes, it is a lot of money, and someone should have monitored it better. But I would be more inclined to listen to the complainers if they were equally (or more) incensed about tax cuts for the rich, ballooning deficits, all the money poured into a needless war in Iraq, etc. A billion dollars, as bad as that is, pales in comparison when you’re talking about a trillion dollars.

Speaking of storms, I was wondering why it was so dark and rainy here today. Then I realized these are the remnants of Alberto passing through. Well, we need the rain.

Did you know that houses in Naples, Florida are selling for more than double their actual value?

Did you know that people in many areas of the world are exposed to the odor of feces on a regular basis?

Contrary to news reports, two soccer fans were not killed because they were cheering too much. They were killed because some maniac had a gun and couldn’t control himself.

Doctors think that obesity could be explained by a lack of proper bacteria in the intestines? Listen. I’m not a fat person, but occasionally I have gained a little too much weight. I have lost a significant amount of weight three times. Two of those times I merely stopped eating peanuts or peanut butter. (Exercising a little more than usual doesn’t hurt, but I don’t believe you can exercise your way to significant weight loss. At least I can’t. I don’t have enough time for that, and I don’t have enough energy. Recently I have started counting calories, which seems to help.) The other time I lost my extra weight by going on a low fat diet, à la Dean Ornish. If you eat fat, you will be fat. It’s as simple as that. If you limit your fat intake, limit your calories, and exercise every day (I like to walk. It’s meditative.) you will lose weight.

According to Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire, Hillary Clinton is having success raising money in Red States. That’s all well and good, but unless she has success in attracting VOTES in the Red States, she will lose in 2008.

Poliblog reports that John Edwards has scored higher than Hillary Clinton in an Iowa poll. This may reflect weakness on the part of Ms. Clinton rather than strength on the part of Mr. Edwards. Poliblog notes that Edwards’ result in this poll was actually lower than his 2004 Iowa result. In any event, I’d rather come in first than second, so congratulations to John Edwards. Maybe he can put together a winning campaign for the nomination after all. He’s a good man who would make a good president. Of course anyone would seem good after eight years of George War Bush.

Bill Frist said that some behavior he engaged in when he was younger was “. . . a heinous and dishonest thing to do,” and that he was “totally schizoid about the whole matter.” In fact he was, he said, “going a little crazy.”

Well, that’s enough to inspire confidence in Dr. Frist, isn't it? Confessing to schizoid behavior and to going "a little crazy" in his youth? I’m glad that he is so (unintentionally?) honest. Maybe all that makes him a good doctor. But we’ve had enough insanity in the White House and in the country for the last 5+ years. The Democrats get to run things beginning in 2007 and 2009. It is time that sanity ruled again.

As if we needed anymore evidence that the world is coming to an end, now the polar bears are eating each other, presumably because global warming has made it difficult for them to find their normal food sources. It is interesting to me how the Right complains about abortion, but they seem to have no problem with all the crimes committed against nature, such as global warming and genetic engineering. Only problem is, we are part of nature. And if you screw up nature, you’re going to screw up mankind as well.

I’ve heard of mudslinging in politics, but this Democratic volunteer seems to have gotten a little too enthusiastic, not to mention having exercised bad judgment, when she allegedly put dog feces in the mail of a Congresswoman. In her defense, she allegedly said that she was just returning what the Republicans have been giving everyone else for years.

So, you think that Bush 43 has never raised taxes? Think again. He signed a bill that triples a tax rate for teenagers.

Another reason why John Corzine might run for president in 2008? He voted against the Iraq War. I'm just saying . . . For me, opposing the Iraq War would be one of the most important qualifications for a new president. Unfortunately, the list of those who did oppose it is not very long.

At least one source is actually predicting that Al Gore will be elected president in 2008.

The red state/blue state divide has been an interesting image for our country recently. (I even wrote a book about it.) Check this post from Elderta on a current depiction of that red state/blue state dichotomy, and what it means about the regime of George War Bush.

There is an article in the news today that says that drinking beer may prevent prostate cancer. That’s strange. I’ve always heard that drinking beer can cause prostate cancer. (Apparently it has to do with raising prolactin levels.) That’s all right for me. I don’t drink beer. Those who do should take today’s news with a grain of salt (hey, that’s a marguerita, isn’t it?)

Al Gore will appear Sunday on This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Where I live that will be 10 am. I’ve already got my TIVO set to record the program.

US veterans seem to be taking a particularly hard hit these days. In May, 26 million vets were put at risk of identity theft when a computer disk containing their personal information was stolen. Now, 22,000 may have been given prostate biopsies with improperly sterilized equipment. What an awful situation. A prostate biopsy is no fun to begin with, but receiving a letter warning that you have possibly been exposed to AIDS or hepatitis just makes an unpleasant situation exponentially more unpleasant. I know people who wish they never had a prostate biopsy. Sometimes they are unnecessary. And a snafu like this does nothing to enhance the image of a medical establishment that sometimes seems too eager to resort to the knife, that often makes mistakes, and frequently just can’t seem to get it right. And of course our veterans deserve better treatment.

Some people have been critical of an FDA report suggesting that restaurants should offer healthier foods, smaller portions, etc. But with our nation’s CHILDREN now being prescribed statin drugs to combat high cholesterol, something should be done. You can talk about personal responsibility all you want, but what about the large corporations? Albert Einstein has said, “If a visitor should come to this country from another planet, would he not find it strange that in this country so much power is permitted to private corporations without their having commensurate responsibility?” I find that strange and wrong. As I recall, Marion Nestle, in her book Food Politics: How the food industry influences nutrition and health, has a good discussion of some of these issues. For me, if healthy food choices were given a louder voice alongside that of less healthy food choices, that would go a long way toward balancing the scales in this country, both morally and nutritionally. As long as the only voice we hear is advising us to make unhealthy food choices, we’re never going to stop the epidemic of obesity. Our health care system will continue to be strained in trying to cope with the consequences of these unhealthy food choices, and in the end we all have to pay.

There are a lot of interesting things on their website, including a guide to the 2006 Senate Races, and a link to their blog, From the Roots: Pulling the Bush Out.
