The Tao of Politics

One of my main concerns is: how can I make a difference? There are thousands of political blogs out there. It’s easy to get lost in that ocean. So I may blog about politics on occasion, or I may blog about health issues, depending on where my interests lead me, and where I feel I can contribute something of significance.

Neil Young’s new album “Living with War” is awesome. You can listen to it at NeilYoung.com. You might be able to download it from Rhapsody, I'm not sure. The most famous song on the album will undoubtedly be “Let’s impeach the president,” and that’s too bad, because there is much on this album that is worth hearing. For social comment, it may be unparalleled in recent memory. For energizing the liberal base this fall, it may prove to be very effective. In fact I will venture to say that the album will be more effective than hundreds of blogs have been. Thank God there are people like Neil Young to speak out for our country.

Paul, at Me & George W., in a conversation with his wife that he relates, asks "What is the price of freedom?"His wife didn’t seem to have an answer. I may not either. But I can say that the price of freedom in Iraq, if that’s what we’re really talking about here (the story, or the justification for war in Iraq seems to change every few months. It started out with regime change, and getting rid of nonexistent WMDs, and eventually morphed into the current party line of spreading freedom) is somewhere in the neighborhood of $276 billion at the present time, and still counting, with some projections putting the eventual financial cost at more than a trillion dollars, perhaps more than two trillion. Additional costs include about 2400 American dead, and tens of thousands wounded. The costs to the Iraqi people, in some respects, are even higher. For example, 100,000 Iraqi families are said to have been displaced, and some 35,000 are said to have been killed. That figure may not include Iraqis who have merely died, rather than been killed. In a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, 62% disapprove of the way George is handling his war in Iraq, and 58% said the war was not worth fighting. Does that mean that 58% think the cost of freedom in Iraq is too high? Could be. So Paul’s wife is not alone in her opposition to the policies of George War Bush. It may help her if she were better informed.

ok, Ok, OK Already is concerned that having more than 250,000 Turkish troops massed along the border with Iraq may lead to further complications in that region. Actually his concerns are voiced a little more vociferously than that, but all we can do at this point, I think, is hold our breath as this thing plays itself out, and vote Democratic in November.

Laelyn at Peace is for Everyone, speaking about the current situation with gasoline, says, “We can't count on the president or Congress to do what they're elected to do — make decisions and policy that will make the world better for ALL people, not just those who can make massive campaign donations . . .” No, we can’t count on this president or this Congress. That’s why we need a different president and a different Congress.

Oh, and while we’re talking about a war on gas, all this administration knows is war: how to pit one side against the other; how to hide behind the enemy; how to do anything to divert attention from its own shortcomings. It has worked so far, but I think the American people have finally had enough.

Tennessee Guerilla Women today has a rather angry cartoon featuring Al Gore (borrowed from Huffingtonpost), and a story on George War Bush’s plummeting poll numbers (they’re at 32%). It is good to have blogs out there like Tennessee Guerilla Women. They give me hope that things can get better in this country. Only problem is, we now have about 1001 more days of George War Bush to put up with. That’s a long time. The only thing that would make that even remotely tolerable would be for the Dems to have some huge success this November. Of course, if George War Bush were to suddenly change political parties, then that would also make the next 1001 days somewhat tolerable. We have a big hole to dig our country out of. I can’t wait to get started. I think Al Gore would be the perfect person to lead the effort. But first we have to wait 1001 days. It won’t help to get rid of one person here or there. We have to get rid of the policies. Lord don’t give us George Allen, John McCain, or Bill Frist. Give us a nice democrat who can balance the budget (if that’s even possible anymore, after 5+ years of George War Bush) and who can bring justice to America again.

Ray Nagin got the most votes in Saturday’s voting for mayor of New Orleans. Folks were bused in, they voted by absentee ballot, etc. But now there’s a runoff. Are the same people who went out of their way to vote in this election going to go out of their way to vote on May 20? That remains to be seen.

Another wonderful day in Iraq, capping off another wonderful weekend.

Bumper sticker seen: “Enough is enough!” (Vote Democratic!) Available here. And here’s a nice one. Here’s another one, although a little confrontational. Here's a Blog response. Here are other suggestions for bumper stickers. And Howard Dean also says we’ve had enough.

Would you believe. . .

. . . the CIA warned George War Bush there were no WMDs in Iraq?

zFacts.com is an interesting website. There you can find a free National Debt Clock for your blog, for example, but you can also find many other things, including in-depth, fact-filled discussions of the Iraq War, global warming, the economy, as well as other topics. The slant here is decidedly anti-Bush, and anti-neocon. Exploring zFacts.com is well worth the time spent. Very entertaining and informative.

Crooks and Liars has a couple of very interesting stories, including video clips relating to Scott McClellan’s resignation, and Chris Matthews’ catching Dan Bartlett in a lie about the Iraq war. Crooks and Liars has much more of interest here. Check it out.

Bryan claims that The Theory of the Democratic Peace is one reason why we are trying to impose democracy on Iraq: no two democracies in history have ever gone to war with each other. Bryan says, however, “Democracy is not a magic cure.” I agree, Democracy is not a magic cure. After all it didn’t prevent the USA, a democracy, from launching a pre-emptive attack on Iraq. George War Bush says, “free societies are peaceful societies.” I guess that applies to every other country except us.

I posted comments at ThinkProgress.org, 11/16/05 concerning holding the president accountable for his mistakes (comment #37). I also published the remarks 11/18/05 on this blog under the title “Wrongs of the New Millennium,” which you can see.

Apparently M. F. Wolf of Bakerstown, PA (mfwolf@zoominternet.net) didn’t like my comments, all these months later, so he sent me three emails:

Email 1. Your A "FLAMING LIBERAL" and your an idiot!
You repeat the same lame arguments on right wing politics. I guess you didn't hear that one of saddams people has said that the WMD's were shipped to Syria.
On Katrina, I guess that's G.W's. fault for not signing on to the kyoto agreement? He caused the storm didn't he!

your a fool and your ideology is dangerous.

Can't you go find some other country to live in, and ruin?

Mike........

Email 2. hey want to buy a turban, how about a sickle and hammer?
mike...........

hell! I'll even bet that you think the borders shouldn't be protected either.......

what an ass you are!
mike.......

Email 3. I didn't see anything on immigration on your blog. could it be that you have no opinion, or the far left wing hasn't said much. which would be why you haven't mentioned it, no party line to repeat!

"I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony"

it not going to happen dude.

quit being a communist ideologue. and become a realist.

mike.........

In response to email number 1, I stand by my comments of November 16, 2005. They constitute what I consider to be one of my most cogent statements ever. I find it interesting that whenever certain people don’t agree with you, they suggest you leave the country. These are the same people who say things like, “America, love it or leave it.” You know, I love my country so much that I even defend Mike’s right to disagree with me. I think that is more than he would grant me. BTW, my great-great-grandfather died in the Civil War, and I can trace my ancestors in this country back to the 1700s, so I think I belong here as much if not more than anyone else.

#2. While I may defend Mike’s right to disagree with me, I do not defend his ad hominem attacks against me.

#3. With regard to immigration, my personal opinion is that we should send all the Mexicans back to Mexico. If I was in another country illegally, I would probably be in big trouble. Illegal aliens should be treated no differently than any other person who commits a crime.

Thanks for the comments, Mike. Next time share them with the rest of the blogosphere.

Left Coaster speculates on whether Al Gore might be the stealth candidate who, if he entered, could effectively redefine the 2008 presidential race. It is no secret that I hope Gore runs for president again. I think he is the main one with the moral authority to lead our country out of the mess in which we find ourselves.

Anger at Bush may hurt GOP at polls? (article) Good. I didn’t want Bush elected to begin with. I knew it would be a disaster, which it has turned out to be. Something has got to turn our country away from the direction in which it is currently headed. Three election cycles (2000, 2002, 2004) have brought us to this point. The midterm elections of 2006 may not get us back on the right track, but success at the polls would certainly be a good start. Our country could use some good news for a change. GOP defeat at the polls this fall could be just what the doctor ordered to help our ailing country.

Some states appear likely to restrict abortion rights. This is an interesting article. Some people will undoubtedly view this as a threat, while others will view it with relief, but that’s politics.

The Raleigh News and Observer today has a section devoted to the question: What would Jesus Do? There are links on this page to discussions of what Jesus would do about homelessness, immigration, etc.

I was disappointed that there was no direct discussion of what Jesus would do about poverty. This is an important question for many Democrats and liberals. We wonder how Republicans can ostensibly favor large corporations and the rich over the poor, especially when many in their party claim to be so religious. It doesn’t seem right. Every fiber of our being tells us that Jesus would help the poor, even if it meant raising taxes on the top 2% of income. It is disingenuous of Republicans to call Democrats “tax and spend liberals” when all we want to do, in many instances, is help those among us who need help. In short, we want to do God’s work. In some ways it is evil for Republicans to thwart that.

Anyway, here is a discussion of what the Bible says about the poor. And here is a more partisan discussion of what Jesus would do about various issues.

Easter gives us an opportunity to reflect on questions such as these, and hopefully make our country a better place for all our citizens to live and thrive.

Every time I hear Bill Clinton give a speech, I am tremendously impressed. He is very articulate, very reasonable, and he really seems to connect with his audience. Here is a speech he gave recently on the subject of biotechnology. I don’t know that I agree with everything he said here, but he really gives a good speech. And that is one of the main points I consider when I think about Hillary Clinton running for president in 2008: if Bill Clinton could run for another term as president, I would definitely vote for him, mainly because I respect him greatly as a thinker. The problem is, in my mind Hillary doesn’t compare favorably with Bill. And I don’t know that support for Bill would necessarily translate into support for Hillary. I think Bill could give all the great speeches he wants and there would still be those who wouldn’t support Hillary. Hillary Clinton is no Bill Clinton. I would vote for her against any Republican, but I do not support her for the Democratic nomination. We need to nominate a winner, and I don’t think Hillary would win. Maybe we need to nominate a uniter, not a divider. I think Hillary is too divisive. I don't think that is necessarily her fault. Some people just don't like her. And as I said, she doesn't really compare favorably with her husband.

Democrats have often gotten a bad rap for being critical of the Iraq war. We have been reviled by the Republicans and accused of being unpatriotic. It is good to see our generals speaking out now. They are not unpatriotic. They are smart men, leaders, and they have seen firsthand some of the insanity being perpetrated by this administration. They want the insanity to stop. Their critiques are something of a vote of no confidence against this administration. The American people get to cast their vote of no confidence this fall in the midterm elections

Any theories about why the new mumps epidemic has erupted in the Midwest? I’m not one, really, for conspiracy theories, but to have an outbreak of mumps like the current one sounds like someone might have screwed up, accidentally or on purpose. Red Orbit speculates that the disease originated from abroad. The current strain is similar to one that spread through England last year.

But whatever the origin of the epidemic, it certainly calls into question the efficacy of our vaccines. Why are 605 people now infected with mumps, with 50 new cases being reported each day? Our vaccines are supposed to protect us from outbreaks like this. What went wrong? (Blogg has an interesting perspective.) Could this happen with other diseases for which we are being vaccinated? What about polio? What about a potential bird flu vaccine? What about bioterrorism? The current mumps epidemic triggers a lot of questions, and so far not enough answers.

Pope Benedict XVI has some harsh words this Easter for genetic engineers who seem to be playing God. Here are the complete remarks. Good for the Pope. Somebody needs to add different perspectives to the discussion of genetic engineering. The Pope has a lot of authority to speak. Let us hope that the world doesn’t view his remarks as irrelevant. Unfortunately the huge corporations have more power than the Pope has. All he can do is talk, whereas the corporations actually put food, their food, genetically engineered or not, in our mouths. More people need to speak out about genetic engineering. If they are against it, or if they are for it, they need to say so. We need to have a dialogue about this subject, which so far we don’t have.

A new study says that a vegan diet is good for your health and for the health of the earth as well. (I can’t believe that the average American actually consumes 3774 calories per day. Well, maybe I can believe it when I see all the obese people around me.)

Now, I think many people would agree that Al Gore is a little overweight. I think he should go on a strictly vegan diet, especially since he has apparently moved to San Francisco. It would be easy to do. And when he runs for president in 2008, that could be part of his campaign platform: cutting the fat, America, for our health and for the health of the earth. It’s an idea.

The Unknown Candidate has an interesting post about deciphering Bush-speak. There has been some discussion recently that George War Bush may be considering attacking Iran with nuclear weapons. During a question and answer session at Johns Hopkins University on Monday the president seemed to deny that was the case. But did he really? Forgive me if I am wrong, but I have not heard the president actually say that we are not going to attack Iran. I heard him say that it was wild speculation, but calling something wild speculation is not a denial. It’s just another example of Bush-speak.

America is said to be planning what is called the “Long War” on terror. I hope we start fighting the war on terror soon. George War Bush has wasted years and squandered resources, both monetary and in terms of human life, in an unnecessary Iraq war, a war that some might even say has made the Long War much more difficult as a consequence.

Fred, at Mad as Hell laments George W(ar) Bush’s duplicitous nature. I agree, we’d better watch out. The last time George W(ar) Bush said he was seeking a diplomatic solution to something, we ended up invading Iraq and, well you know the rest.

Our nation’s generals certainly couldn’t be called anti-war, but I think they are anti-stupidity. Some are questioning the decisions of Donald Rumsfeld, but doesn’t the buck stop with the president? George W(ar) Bush sent our troops to Iraq. If we’re looking for someone to blame for the current situation, blame him.

Blognyc submits evidence to support the contention that George W(ar) Bush is incompetent.

Baloney Press suggests that we send the NHL to Iraq. I don’t know about that but I would be willing to send the NBA. I mean, it couldn’t be much more dangerous in Baghdad than it is in Denver, especially in light of the fact that Julius Hodge was shot this weekend. Sending hundreds of men who are all over 6 feet 5 could have a sobering, even intimidating effect on the Iraqi people. Teach them to shoot baskets instead of each other.

Since the Iraqi people are having trouble forming a government, maybe we could send them ours. Since most of our government voted for the Iraq war to begin with, it would only make sense for them to have to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty trying (keyword: trying) to put the country back together again. And we could put together a new government. After all, we have an election coming up in a few months. It’s just an idea.

Maine Democrats suggests that we need a new war, and that our criterion for choosing a target this time should be based on which country makes the best desserts. Wouldn’t that put the French in the crosshairs? I think we’ve been doing a pretty good job so far of picking opponents. It seems to be based on which country has the least capability of fighting back. It worked in Afghanistan and Iraq. Using that criterion, France might make an ideal target, if they didn’t already have nuclear weapons (weapons of mass destruction.) That, however, could be the perfect rationale for going to war with the French: rid their country of weapons of mass destruction. What is the threat? The French are the main opponents to our policy of pre-emptive war. If their ideas spread to, say, the Brits, then we wouldn’t have anybody else on our side, not that we really care. But we could liberate the French people from these dangerous ideas. Everyone knows that a rational discussion of the issues often leads to peace. We can’t have anybody telling us who we can attack and who we can’t, so let’s attack the French. We could shut them up once and for all.

Mash, at Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying, seems to be worried that the United States is planning a nuclear first strike against Iran.

Retired Air Force Col. Sam Gardiner, an expert in targeting and war games, says, "The Bush administration is very close to being left with only the military option" regarding dealing with Iran, and since conventional weapons at this point would likely be ineffective, that leaves the nuclear option high on the list.

Mash says “May our children forgive us” if we hit Iran with nuclear weapons. Our children already have a lot to forgive us for. Yes, let us hope we don’t add a nuclear first strike to the list.

Paul Zummo at The Political Spectrum says, “I love politics, but quite frankly I’ve grown tired of politics.”

I get tired of saying the same things over and over. For me, if you’re a thinking person, and you reach a conclusion about a question or a problem, then the next step is to find solutions to the problem and to solve it.

I get tired of saying that the president is a jerk. I get tired of saying that the Republicans are the problem. Thing is, I think that’s what they’re counting on: that we will get tired of calling them on these big questions, and then things will continue unchanged. That’s one reason why we cannot get tired of politics. Politics are a means to an end. The end is a better America for all her citizens. If we falter in this goal, then we leave it to the corporations and the rich people, and that’s not right.

jamminjim says, “I really hate politics in this country. I’m sick of it. It’s like all politicians know how to do is attack the opposition. Neither Republicans or Democrats ever do anything useful.”

I might remind jamminjim that, with the Republicans in control of Congress, the Democrats are somewhat limited in what they can do. I don’t claim that the Democrats are all that great, but I would rather see them working for their agenda than see the Republicans working for theirs. I think the Democrats would like to see us out of Iraq. I think the Democrats would like to see fairness in taxation, a balanced budget, social justice.

I do agree somewhat with jamminjim, though. I hate politics in this country too. It seems like we have a politics of selfishness, when we should have a politics of selflessness: doing what is best for the people, ALL the people. I’d like to see all that change.

Open heart surgery is becoming closed heart surgery as doctors experiment with a technique to replace heart valves that is much less invasive than has previously been the case.

There was an article the other day about how scientists had isolated stem cells from mice testicles. Now there is an article about how scientists have produced stem cells from human testicles. Looks like we’re getting closer and closer to something that really works, and to something that I might actually want to use. I wouldn't personally be inclined to use stem cells from mice testes.

Don’t forget to eat your garlic. It may be effective against cancer and heart disease.

Does anyone remember what a disaster the swine flu vaccine was thirty years ago, and how it was so unnecessary? So tell me, do you still trust scientists and doctors all that much. Let’s hope they don’t screw it up with bird flu like they did with swine flu.

Would you believe . . .

. . . cell phone use can cause brain tumors after all?

. . . studies that said drinking alcohol was beneficial to you health were wrong?

. . . Australian scientists may soon genetically engineer cereal grains to contain more fiber?

. . . insects contribute $57 billion per year to the US economy?

. . . occasionally giving in to a food craving can help a diet succeed?
